Testimonial # 20

This time last year, I was in a mess. Many family and friend illnesses and deaths had made my life one stressful experience, and I was starting to get physical symptoms of severe stress. My academic advisor, being VERY academic, did not support me very well, so I turned to the student support team, and in particular, R. I didn't have an appointment or anything, but she listened to me and was so supportive. After I saw her, I found I could cope much better with support from the University - something that was lacking before. I do not know what would have happened to me without her, I was seriously considering dropping out of the year. I cannot believe that the University is getting rid of these ESSENTIAL people. Academic advisors and tutors are NOT TRAINED to help with personal problems, and sometimes, when problems are unrelated to academia, they are just not interested. R. attended the funeral of my friend. My academic advisor did not. I think that says it all really. Getting rid of the student support team is one of the stupidest things the University is doing and I cannot believe it was even considered, let alone being let to carry though. I am actually rather glad I am leaving Sussex soon if this is the concern that the University shows about its students and their well being.
